Plenty has been said and done about plastics in the kitchen in recent years. Regular scares about plastics leeching carcinogenic chemicals into foods keeps us on our toes, and it’s probably fair to say that in a few more years time we will be throwing out some of the new plastics we were told that we COULD trust because they too might be poisoning us or our children.
Traditional materials like glass, metal and ceramics are without a doubt still the safest option, but they have drawbacks too – they can be heavy and can break easily.
While I can’t condemn plastic juicers – I still use one myself from time to time – it is good to know that there are alternatives out there. Several manufacturers make stainless steel equivalents of their juicers, which actually look and work better than the usual plastic models. The trade off is a higher price – but remember the machine will last a lot longer too.
The juicing blades and mechanism on a stainless steel juicer are –
Easier to clean (pulp doesn’t stick)
Always Dishwasher safe (don’t chip or scratch)
Don’t break when you drop the parts (plastic gets brittle after a year or two)
More hygienic (bacteria find it hard to live on the smooth surface)
Always in fashion – stainless steel looks sleek and stylish
Stronger, so they handle more pressure and can squeeze out more juice
You will find virtually every kind of juicer can be found in steel. Lemon and citrus juicers, high speed high output centrifugal juicers, or the newer generation of auger juicers in single or twin screw design.
If I was a first time buyer again, I would definitely choose a stainless steel juicer model over the ones I have owned now. They last longer, look better, and look better for longer: Plastic does tend to get quickly stained by juices from vegetables like carrot and beetroot. Though I don’t mind hugely, It does look a lot nicer when everything is shiny and clean.

Let me say that any juicer is better than no juicer of course – but I do feel that the extra money is worth it, you do definitely get what you pay for.
